The ROI of a UI/UX Redesign
When we discuss custom software packages with current or prospective clients, they almost always have two questions:
What will this cost me?
What returns will I get?
And of course, these are reasonable questions to ask! There are very few situations where blindly moving forward ends up being profitable, never mind wise. There are elements of custom software that have a set cost, but their ROI is more difficult to quantify—but they’re worth the investment. Frequently, these features don’t necessarily generate revenue as much as they stop income loss. A UI/UX redesign can often fall into these categories.
XKCD’s iconic Workaround comic pokes fun at less-informed technology users finding a way to manipulate technology into accomplishing their goal, but not always in the most efficient manner. For older FileMaker databases, the structural design can be very similar to this workaround idea. Claris works hard to include useful new features, tools, and options in each FileMaker release. We often see older databases were—before a specific function was readily available in FileMaker—a developer used advanced coding logic and processes to create the same end goal. But that old method can be vulnerable to security weaknesses, take more processing time, or not include all of the options and capabilities. Updating the user interface allows these to be upgraded to today’s best practices.
For many of our FileMaker clients, they initially used the platform for one element of their business, such as invoicing or dispatch, but were impressed with the capabilities within FileMaker and added more and more business functions to their database over time. As the years have gone on, processes have changed or been deprecated--however, they still exist within the database. Users are navigating through multiple layouts and routines to perform a task that a new interface would enable with one click. Onboarding new employees can be time intensive as they learn which layouts they need, which buttons to never ever click, and how to work the system in general. In these circumstances, a new interface would allow the app to refocus on the present-day needs of the business, incorporate permissions to more readily provide or restrict access, and reduce mistakes.
If part or all of your database is client-facing, a UI/UX update can help solidify your brand with consumers, as well as instilling confidence in your company. Older designs are frequently viewed with disdain, particularly if new users find it uneasy to use. Additionally, when people see software that has an interface from the ‘90s or early ‘00s, they often wonder if the security and privacy protocols are equally outdated.
While the ROI of an interface refresh can be difficult to quantify, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Outdated and difficult-to-use interfaces cost organizations money; a refresh and update to current best practices instills confidence, makes them easier to use, and as a whole creates a better experience for end users—stopping the money loss.
